Klazzik Numismatics Australian Banknote Price Guide

Australian Five Dollar Banknote Price Guide

This complete guide follows Australian decimal Five Dollar banknotes from the first paper issue in 1967 through the polymer and Next Generation issues to 2021, identifying signatures, prefixes, star notes, major varieties and collector values.

Values are shown in Australian dollars as general collector guides. Originality, centring, paper quality, folds, stains, tears, writing and other defects can materially affect the value of an individual note.

1967-1972 FIVE DOLLAR SERIES

Series Background

Approximately 197,504,000 Five Dollar notes were printed across the 1967-1972 period.

The Five Dollar denomination was not issued immediately when Australia changed to decimal currency. It was introduced on 29 May 1967. Star replacement notes continued during this period, with recognised Five Dollar star prefixes running from ZNA to ZND.

The buildings shown on the reverse originated in Harrington and Pitt Streets, Sydney, in the early 1800s. The ship depicted was one of several vessels associated with the name Waverley.

1974-1992 FIVE DOLLAR SERIES

Series Background

Approximately 978,068,318 Five Dollar notes were printed across the 1974-1992 period.

In 1972 the title changed from Commonwealth of Australia to Australia, with the legal-tender wording modified accordingly. Later issues also introduced changes to serial-number styles.

Early notes used Gothic serial numbering, followed by OCR-B numbering during the Knight & Wheeler period. The source also records a temporary return to Gothic numbering on some Johnston & Fraser notes when the required numbering machinery was unavailable and an urgent supply of Five Dollar notes was needed.

Some Fraser & Higgins notes were sold to collectors as uncut pairs and blocks of four, while some Fraser & Cole notes were sold in uncut form with serial letters XVV.

PAPER TO POLYMER

The $5 Note Changes in 1992

After the final paper Five Dollar issues, Australia moved the denomination to polymer in 1992. The guide continues below in chronological order through the first polymer series, the modified polymer issues, the 2001 Federation note and the Next Generation series.

1992-1993 FIRST POLYMER SERIES

Series Background

The first polymer Five Dollar note was issued in 1992. Public complaints that the first note's colours were too similar to the Ten Dollar note led to a revised colour treatment in 1993.

The reference distinguishes medium-to-dark green serial numbers from pale green serial numbers. Pale green serials are recorded as having been found scattered through some sections of the note runs, with the colour difference thought to have arisen from ink variation during prolonged printing and storage.

1992 ISSUE

1995-1998 MODIFIED FIVE DOLLAR SERIES

Series Background

A redesigned Five Dollar note appeared in 1995. The first polymer issue's colour problem had been addressed and the new note introduced orientation bands for the visually impaired.

The 1995 issue exists with both wide recoloured orientation bands and a scarcer narrow orientation-band variety. The catalogue also records special AA95 notes, and later 1997 test-note prefix groups.

1995 ISSUE
