Australian One Dollar Banknote Price Guide
This guide identifies Australian paper One Dollar notes by issue, signatures, reference number, serial-prefix detail and recognised star replacement notes, with practical collector values by grade.
Values are shown in Australian dollars as general collector guides. Originality, centring, paper quality, folds, stains, tears, writing and other defects can materially affect the value of an individual note.
1966-1974 ONE DOLLAR SERIES
Series Background
Australia's decimal banknotes entered circulation on 14 February 1966. The paper One Dollar note carried the title Commonwealth of Australia and featured Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.
The design was by Gordon Andrews. The reverse used a line interpretation of Aboriginal art based on an original bark painting by David Malangi. The notes are approximately 140 × 70 mm, with orange and brown as the principal colours.
Approximately 657,770,000 One Dollar notes were printed across the 1966-1974 series.

1974-1984 ONE DOLLAR SERIES
Series Background
Following a direction from Prime Minister Gough Whitlam in 1972, the title on Australian banknotes changed from Commonwealth of Australia to Australia, and the legal-tender wording was revised accordingly.
The Phillips & Wheeler signature combination therefore appears on both the earlier Commonwealth issue and the later Australia issue. The One Dollar series continued with Gothic-style serial numbering through the circulation issues covered here.
Approximately 1,015,229,901 One Dollar notes were printed across the 1974-1984 period.
