Australian One Pound Banknote Price Guide

This guide identifies Australia's One Pound banknotes by issue, signatures, reference number, serial-number format and recognised sub-type, with practical collector values by grade.

Values are shown in Australian dollars as general collector guides. Originality, grade, repairs, staining, folds, tears, paper quality, colour, serial-number significance and provenance can all materially affect the value of an individual note.

1913-1918 ISSUE

1913 One Pound - Collins & Allen

The first Commonwealth of Australia One Pound issue carries the signatures of J. R. Collins and G. T. Allen. Several recognised serial-number formats occur within this issue, making the serial style, prefix and suffix important parts of identification.

The obverse centres on the Australian coat of arms and denomination, while the reverse depicts a gold-mining scene at Victoria Quartz Mine, Bendigo.

R18a: The red-serial P-prefix notes are particularly scarce. Recorded auction data for serials P000004 to P000100 is limited, and these early notes can command substantial premiums.

Serial varieties: Random serial-number variations are known within the later R18d and R18e styles. These can involve a different letter, figure or altered character form within an otherwise normal serial. Such variations may attract a modest collector premium.

1914-1915 EMERGENCY ISSUE

1914 One Pound Emergency Issue - Collins & Allen

During the First World War, demand for One Pound notes increased so rapidly that the Note Printer could not produce enough Commonwealth notes on the available machinery. To keep sufficient currency in circulation, the government temporarily adapted older banknote forms for emergency use.

This issue was created by overprinting surplus One Pound notes of the English, Scottish and Australian Bank Limited. The original banknotes dated from the late nineteenth century, and the Commonwealth overprint clearly marked them as government-issued currency.

1914-1915 EMERGENCY ISSUE

R20

1914 One Pound Emergency Issue - “Rainbow Pound”

The second emergency One Pound issue became known to collectors as the Rainbow Pound. Unlike the earlier emergency overprint, this was a newly printed design produced to meet wartime demand for One Pound notes.

Its colourful appearance was distinctive, but weaknesses in the design and printing made the note comparatively easy to counterfeit. As a result, the issue was withdrawn after a relatively short period in circulation.

Surviving examples: The recorded population is very small. Around 32 R20a notes are recorded as surviving, with the best known example reaching Uncirculated condition. Around 26 R20b notes are recorded, with the best reported example reaching approximately good Very Fine.

1918 One Pound - Cerutty & Collins

The 1918 One Pound issue carries the signatures of C. J. Cerutty and Jas R. Collins. It continued the Commonwealth One Pound design family, with several recognised prefix and suffix combinations used across the issue.

The obverse retains the Commonwealth coat of arms and denomination layout, while the reverse again features the gold-mining scene at Victoria Quartz Mine, Bendigo.

1923 One Pound - Miller & Collins

The 1923 One Pound issue carries the signatures of Denison Miller and Jas R. Collins. It introduced a smaller-format One Pound design and is found with several recognised imprint and serial-prefix combinations.

The obverse is predominantly light green, while the reverse depicts Captain Cook landing at Botany Bay, based on a painting by E. Phillips Fox commissioned by the National Gallery of Victoria in 1902.

The R23 group is distinguished by its smaller H serial prefix. Both imprinted and non-imprinted forms are recognised, and the prefix range is important when identifying the correct sub-type.

The 1932 Riddle & Sheehan notes are particularly important for signature identification because the Sheehan signature was altered during the print run, creating the recognised thick- and thin-signature varieties.

The 1933 One Pound issue carries the signatures of E. C. Riddle and H. Sheehan. It introduced a new legal-tender design featuring King George V and remained in use through the mid-1930s.

The note is predominantly dark green. The reverse carries an allegorical engraving representing Australia's pastoral industries.

1938-1953 SERIES

Series Background

Approximately 663,956,000 One Pound notes were printed across this 1938-1953 period.

Earlier in the period, faulty notes were replaced by newly printed notes carrying the same serial number, which could slow production. During the Armitage & McFarlane issue, replacement notes began to be identified by a star at the end of the serial number.

The design is predominantly dark green, measures approximately 155 × 79 to 156 × 81 mm, features King George VI on the obverse, and carries an allegorical pastoral-industries engraving on the reverse.

1953 ISSUE

1953 One Pound - Coombs & Wilson

The 1953 One Pound issue carries the signatures of H. C. Coombs and Roland Wilson and was issued by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. It introduced the Queen Elizabeth II portrait design used for the final pre-decimal One Pound series.

1961 One Pound - Coombs & Wilson

The 1961 issue retains the signatures of H. C. Coombs and Roland Wilson, but was issued by the Reserve Bank of Australia. Two reverse-colour varieties are recognised: a darker green back and a brighter emerald-green back.

1953-1966 SERIES

Series Background

Approximately 1,066,000,000 One Pound notes were printed during the 1953-1966 period.

The signature titles changed during the series: the earlier notes identify Coombs with the Commonwealth Bank, while the later Reserve Bank issue reflects his role as Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia.

The two R34 reverse-colour varieties are a useful identification feature. The earlier form has a darker green back, while the later variety uses a brighter emerald-green colour.
